Minister of state for education Annpurna Devi shared the figures in response to a question by Congress Rajya Sabha member Rajeev Shukla. The figures suggest that nearly 20,000 schools were shut down and around 1.9 lakh teachers lost their jobs in 2021-22.
As per her reply, in the year 2020-21, there were 15,09,136 schools in the country, including private and government-aided institutions. However, in 2021-22, the number came down to 14,89,115. During the same period, the number of teachers dropped to 95,07,123 from 96,96,425.
Annpurna Devi informed Parliament about survey on mental well-being of children
The Ministry of Education with the help of the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) conducted the Mental Health Survey keeping in view the perspectives of National Education Policy, 2020 which emphasizes students’ mental health and well-being in order to provide holistic development.
A total of 3,79,842 students of classes 6 to 12 from different schools across the country participated in the survey.
The overall findings of the survey indicate that: the majority of students expressed feeling responsible for doing well in their life, are satisfied with school life, are trustworthy, and do not hesitate in seeking social support. However, a decline is observed in students’ responses about their physical appearance, satisfaction with personal and school life, and availability of people to share their feelings and experience of happiness, as they move from the middle to secondary stage.
