According to the media reports, a total of 2152 undergraduate engineering seats decreased by the affiliated colleges in Kerala for the academic year 2020-21.

College affiliated to APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University, AKTU Kerala witnessed a dip in engineering seats this year for various courses. According to the media reports, a total of 2152 undergraduate engineering seats decreased by the affiliated colleges in Kerala for the academic year 2020-21. A university source while speaking to a reputed media portal confirmed that the number of BTech seats in KTU affiliated colleges got decreased by 2152. Compared to last year, i.e. total BTech seats that were 47268 now came down to 45116 seats this year.

Sources also state that the decrease in the number of seats available to BTech courses is there due to several reasons involved in this slump for the past two years. According to the university sources, few colleges affiliated to the varsity decided not to admit new students as the number of students who took admission last year were very less. However, other colleges either decreased the number of batches or surrendered certain engineering branches that include Information Technology as a prime one due to less response to such courses. Other branches are electronics that the self-financing sector has surrendered this year.

Past years records state that there was a marginal increase in the number of registered candidates for BTech seats, in 2019 as compared to the previous year. Around 25,000 seats were filled in colleges affiliated to KTU in 2018, the same has marginally increased by 8 percent i.e., 27,000 seats in 2019. Reports also suggest that private colleges performed well while filling the seats however, the self-financing colleges found it really tough.
