The first batch will have approximately 300 students, and admission procedures will be entirely online.

The Indian Institute of Creative Technologies (IICT), India’s first dedicated higher education institute for the AVGC‑XR sector (Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics and Extended Reality), will begin admissions in August 2025.

Announced earlier this year at the WAVES Summit, the institute aims to fill the critical skills gap in India’s rapidly expanding digital creative economy.

The first academic session will commence in September 2025, with classes hosted at the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC) campus at Pedder Road, Mumbai. A permanent 10-acre campus is also being developed at Dadasaheb Phalke Film City, Goregaon, supported by a ₹400 crore government investment.

In its inaugural year, the IICT will offer 18 specialised programmes, including:

6 courses in gaming

4 programmes in post-production

8 courses across animation, comics and XR technologies

These will include both full-time degree programmes and short-term professional diplomas and certificates. Additionally, the institute will run trainer certification programmes and postgraduate diplomas in creative technology for professionals and educators.

The curriculum has been developed in close collaboration with global technology giants such as Google, Meta, NVIDIA, Microsoft, Apple, Adobe, and WPP, which will also support student internships, placements, and incubation of creative tech startups. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has also been signed with the University of York (UK) for international academic exchange and research collaborations.

The Mumbai campus will house state-of-the-art infrastructure including:

Animation and VFX labs

Game development and testing labs

Virtual production studio and immersive reality zones

Smart classrooms and edit suites

A preview theatre and creative incubator space

Officials said the first batch will have approximately 300 students, and admission procedures will be entirely online. Eligibility criteria and course-specific requirements will be released in the coming days on the official IICT website: theiict.in.

Modelled on the lines of IITs and IIMs, IICT is envisioned as a Centre of Excellence for building talent in India’s AVGC‑XR ecosystem, which is projected to generate over 20 lakh new jobs by 2030. The initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to position India as a global hub for creative technology, digital content, and immersive media.
