CBSE is considering a two-tier system for Science and Mathematics in Classes 11 and 12, allowing students to select between standard and advanced levels based on their academic interests and career aspirations in accordance with the NEP 2020. At present, the 2-tier STEM curriculum is offered for Mathematics in class 10.

CBSE class 11 and 12 news

CBSE Class 11 and 12 Exams 2026: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is planning to implement a two-tier system for Science, Technology, Engineering and Management (STEM) for classes 11 and 12. The plan is an extension of the model already introduced in Classes 9 and 10, where science is offered at two levels, basic and standard, to accommodate different student needs. CBSE is likely to extend this system to STEM subjects in higher secondary classes, starting with Class 11 students from the 2026–27 academic year.

Further, CBSE currently offers Mathematics at two levels in class 10, i.e., standard and basic. While both basic and standard levels follow the same CBSE syllabus, the examination for the basic level is comparatively easier. This tiered exam structure is designed to cater to students’ varying proficiency levels in Science and Mathematics, offering flexibility in CBSE Class 11 and 12 academic planning. This new proposal is part of the broader reforms under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which focuses on flexible learning, subject choice, and a multidisciplinary approach to help students align studies with their interests and career goals.

According to media sources, the timeline for implementation may change, as it depends on the release of the new NCERT textbooks for higher classes and how well they support the two-level learning system. At present, the NCERT new textbooks aligned with the New Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE) 2023 have been released for classes 1 to 4 and classes 6 and 7.
