Falling numbers of high scorers came as a surprise for many after the declaration of CBSE 10th Results 2020 on July 15, 2020. Unlike CBSE 12th results 2020, the number of students scoring 90% and above in Class 10 dropped to 41, 804 as compared to the last yearβs number β 15, 452. CBSE 10th Results saw a marginal increase in pass percentage i.e. 0.36% this year. However, in 2019, the increase in the pass percentage was 4.4 %. The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) cancelled the pending CBSE 10th Board Exams due to the rising COVID-19 cases. However, it was just the North-east Delhi students who missed the maximum exams due to riots. For them, the Board decided to release CBSE 10th results according to a new assessment scheme. The Board calculated their marks on the basis of the average of the best three performances. This was also one of the reasons why CBSE didnβt release CBSE 10th Toppers list.
According to the official statement released by the Board after announcing the cancellation of the exams, the compartment exams will be conducted when the situation would be βconduciveβ, this means that these students would not be given any second chance to improve their scores. According to the result stats, a total of 1,50,198 students are under the CBSE 10th compartment list. The CBSE 10th stats reveal, girls outshone boys this year with 93.31%, which is also an increase from 92.45% in 2019. This year, Class 10 results witness no change in the pass percentage of the boys. However, the pass percentage of transgender has fallen drastically from 94.74% in 2019 to 78.95% this year. Looking at the region-wise pass percentage, the Trivandrum region is again at the top with 99.28%, followed by Chennai and Bengaluru at 98.95% and 98.23%, respectively. However, the Delhi region is in the second last position with a pass percentage of 85.86% which is not the case with CBSE 12th Results 2020.
Talking about the sharp decrease in the highest scorer of CBSE 10th Results 2020, Jyoti Arora, principal of Mount Abu Public School, said, "l held a meeting with the teachers of my school to explore the reasons behind the decrease. We are not being able to comprehend. I was just told that mathematics and science papers were a bit tough."
However, the principal of Modern Public School, Alka Kapur feels that evaluation carried out at homes due to COVID-19 could be one factor. Ms Kapur said,"When answer-sheets are checked at centres, the answers are discussed and marked. It has been casual checking and how responsibly the evaluators followed the marking scheme is one big question. Students are demoralised, especially the science results have been very demotivating.β
