CM's decision to cancel Maharashtra University Exams opposed by state's Governor
Maharashtra state Governor is against the CM's decision to cancel the universities' final-year exams. The Governor said that in his letter he asked the CM to resolve the issues related to the conduction of the University exams amid the COVID-19 outbreak but he had not asked for cancellations of the same.
Maharashtra University Exam Cancellation announced by state Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray is receiving mixed responses. The Maharashtra CM announced that the exams for the final year students would not be conducted and remain cancelled. However, the Governor of the state BS Koshrayi, showed his disagreement over the same saying that the decision regarding the cancellation of exams is taken without profound thinking. The Governor said, “The final decision to hold exams should be in consonance with the provisions of Maharashtra Universities Act.”
The Governor said, “If the exams are cancelled it may lead to jeopardised student’s future.” He also wrote a letter to the chief minister seeking his response over the issue of no exams in the state. According to the reports, the governor said, “The arbitrary decision violated the basic principle that to obtain an identical degree there cannot be two sets of criteria for one who has obtained it through exams and for others who has obtained it through average marks. Thus exams cannot be optional.”
As the governor is the chancellor of all universities in the state, he is the final authority in the case of University exams. Thus the decision shall rest with him. Mr Koshravi said that in his letter he asked the CM to resolve the issues related to the conduction of the University exams but he had not asked for cancellations of the same.
The governor also said that he had received no updates from the chief minister and was surprised to learn that the exams had been cancelled through media reports.
According to the Governor, if Boards can conduct exams so can the universities. He further stated that the students of Law and Medicine and architecture need to register themselves with the professional bodies, which would not give them licenses as they would not have been evaluated
