IIT Kanpur raises funds to help needy students with COVID treatment

The aim of this fundraiser activity is to provide financial aid to students who are facing medical emergencies.

In a bid to help needy students with the COVID treatment, the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, has raised a fund of over Rs 1 crore. The fund was raised by donations from 650 contributors. The aim of this fundraiser activity is to provide financial aid to students who are facing medical emergencies.

IIT Kanpur director Prof Abhay Karandikar said that the initiative was started on May 1, 2021. The portal for the fundraising initiative was launched on May 5, 2021. The portal had been receiving requests for help from students since its launch so, IIT Kanpur decided to set up a relief fund.

There are over 8300 students at IIT Kanpur, and 500 of them need the financial help of Rs one lakh each. By looking at the need, the target of the initiative is to raise a fund of Rs. 5 crores. Some of the students who approached the IIT Kanpur authorities needed money to treat their family members.

The director of IIT Kanpur had reached out to alumni and well-wishers through social media for this initiative. The response to the fundraising activity was overwhelming. A committee has been set up consisting of dean students' affairs and dean of resource and alumni, student president and two representatives of the alumni community. The primary responsibility of the committee is to evaluate each request and decide the beneficiaries. The purpose of this fundraiser initiative taken by the IIT Kanpur is to provide immediate assistance for medication, food etc., to the needy students.
