Q. What is the admission process for IIT Kanpur?
A. After the application process is over; students have to go through various selection rounds for final admission. The institute considers the merit of the candidates for MBA and PhD admission. For BTech, MDes, MSc, BSc and MTech courses, JEE Advanced, IIT JAM CEED and GATE scores are considered for the selection of candidates. Additionally, admission to PhD and MS by Research is based on UGC NET/ CSIR NET and other national-level exam scores. After the exams, JoSAA, COAP and CCMN Counselling are conducted for seat allotment to BTech, MTech and MSc courses. However, a merit list is released by the institute for announcing the names of the candidates shortlisted for certificate, PhD and MS by Research courses followed by a counselling round. Candidates need to pay the admission fee to confirm their admission.

A. No, IIT Kanpur only offers merit-based admission for all the courses. It accepts JEE Advanced scores for admission to BTech. Q. BTech: Is there a provision of pursuing an integrated BTech degree at IIT Kanpur?
A. Yes, IIT Kanpur also offers an option of a dual degree, i.e., Bachelors-Masters Dual Degree to the students. A student earns both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree at the end of this five-year course. The dual degree programme has three categories:
- Category A: In this case, both degrees are in the same discipline/department. Example: BTech-M Tech.
- Category B: This is a two-discipline/ department programme where the bachelor’s degree is in the parent discipline/ department and the master’s degree is in a different discipline/ department. Thus, three combinations are possible in this category, ex: BTech-M Tech, BTech-MS and BTech-MDes. Students can choose any one of the aforementioned combinations.

A. Candidates seeking admission to MTech at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur must have passed a bachelor's degree in Engineering or Science (4-year course) or must have completed their master's degree in Science with marks not below the specified minimum. A relaxation of 5% aggregate or 0.5 CPI is offered to SC/ST/PwD category candidates on the minimum eligibility score. The four semester M.Tech. program attracts approximately 40 students each year. The students are required to take a minimum of six courses, including two from mandatory streams- catalysis and reaction engineering, transport phenomena, thermodynamics, and mathematics or numerical methods. This is followed by six course units and a summer term of research. Mechanism exists for a student in master's program to transition to doctoral study in the department.
Admissions:
Admissions to the M.Tech program happens every summer, usually in the month of April-May. The notification for the same, for all departments, is posted on the institute webpage. Currently, the admissions are done solely on the basis of GATE scores. The eligibility for the MTech program are given in details in the PG manual of IITK.
