Mumbai University: The Bombay University and College Teachers’ Union has written to the University Grants Commission (UGC) stating that Mumbai University has violated its guidelines for the conduct of first-year exams for undergraduate students of traditional streams. According to various media reports, the union said that the MU has failed to comply with the norm of having at least 90 days of teaching, and instead directed colleges to close the first semester exams by January 9 which is at least two weeks short of the mandatory semester academic time available for teaching.

Commenting on the matter, general secretary Madhu Paranajpe said, “It is a matter of grave concern that MU remained casual towards its task to finalise the academic calendar. It did not announce dates for the commencement of first-year classes. As a result, online lectures started in a nonuniform manner across colleges ...students are neither getting 90 teaching days nor a preparatory break." The union has asked MU to direct colleges to schedule first-year exams in the last week of January.

Meanwhile, the reports also suggest that Mumbai University announced that it has extended the last date to conduct semester-end examinations for final-year students. Mumbai University has permitted exams for all courses - arts, commerce and science- until January 9. Earlier, the notice released on November 18 by varsity stated that the deadline to finish the examination by December 31, 2020. Also, reports have also emerged that Mumbai University might bring some changes to the exam pattern and add more questions in the MCQ format. Proctoring or digital supervision will be also made mandatory and cases of malpractices will be dealt with strictly. Also, the university has planned to appoint vigilance squads to oversee the conduct of exams.
