Amid the rising COVID-19 cases, the Himachal Pradesh government on April 19, 2021, decided to extend the closure of all educational institutes until May 1. According to the official statement released by the government, the decision is taken considering the health and safety of students.  Earlier, the state government ordered the closure of the educational institutes until April 21. After analyzing the reviewing the coronavirus situation in the state, Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur issued fresh orders regarding the extension.

The chief minister also clarified that along with the students, the faculty at schools, colleges and universities are also not required to come on their duty. He further added that the state Cabinet will meet on April 22 to take more decisions and make strategies to contain the spread of coronavirus.

In view of the increasing cases and the need for the best healthcare system, the CM directed officials to enhance the bed capacity in hospitals. He said steps will be taken to ensure the proper availability of oxygen and the medical staff in the state. Informing the citizens of the state, the CM said that they working to enhance the bed capacity at the Nerchowk medical college, IGMC-Shimla, Zonal Hospital, Dharamshala, Tanda medical college and and other hospitals.

The minister also assured that an appropriate number of health workers will be posted for the care of coronavirus patients. Meanwhile, special emphasis is being laid on providing better health care and other facilities to the patients under home isolation. The vaccination drive has been speeded up and so far, 11.46 lakh people have been given the first dose, he added.
