IIT Bombay partners with Maharashtra Govt for ‘Udaan’ project
The collaboration aims at facilitating efficient and effective translation of all books and publications concerning conventional and professional courses into Marathi language.
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay has collaborated with the Government of Maharashtra to facilitate efficient and effective translation of all books into Marathi language.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Directorate of Higher Education and Director of Technical Education, Government of Maharashtra, and IIT Bombay in the presence of Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, Minister of Education Chandrakant Patil and Principal Secretary, Directorate Of Higher Education, Vikas Chandra Rastogi, IIT Bombay Director Prof Subhasis Chaudhuri and Dean (R&D) Prof Milind Atrey.
The collaboration aims at facilitating efficient and effective translation of all books and publications concerning conventional and professional courses into Marathi language as outlined in the National Education Policy 2020 using the ‘Udaan’ project which is led by Prof Ganesh Ramakrishnan of IIT Bombay.
Prof Ramakrishnan explained how the ‘Udaan’ platform is an end-to-end machine translation framework that includes extensive use of lexical resources and a post-editing platform. The ecosystem enables rapid translation of documents for rapidly bringing technical works into publishable state. The work is based on continuous research work resulting in faster turn-around time for correcting errors and fine-tuning the translation models in low-resource settings.
The Honorable Governor of Maharashtra Shri. Bhagat Singh Koshyari called upon the Director of IIT Bombay Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri, Dean (R&D) Prof. Milind Atrey and Prof. Ganesh Ramakrishnan to further discuss the importance of a key collaboration and the widespread implications of appropriate incorporation of technology for social good.
The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) recently acknowledged the IIT’s Bombay ‘Udaan’ project for technical book writing scheme. The AICTE said in a statement, “Udaan team helped immensely in speeding up the process of translation of technical books. Their work is based on continuous research work resulting in faster turn-around time for correcting errors and fine-tuning the translation models in a low-resource setting.”
