The Australia-India Critical Minerals Research Hub (AICMRH) was established through an MoU between IIT Hyderabad and Monash University, with the signing witnessed by Dharmendra Pradhan, India’s Minister of Education, and Jason Clare MP, Australia’s Minister for Education. The Hub is dedicated to addressing global challenges in critical minerals research and fostering innovations for sustainable mining practices. In support of AICMRH’s activities, the Ministry of Education has approved $1.1 million as the first installment of a $5 million funding plan under the SPARC Scheme.
The primary goal of the proposed Hub is to unite leading academicians, researchers, and industry experts from both Australia and India to collaborate on joint projects focused on developing methodologies for the exploration, extraction, processing, and recycling of critical minerals. By harnessing the collective expertise of researchers and professionals from academia, research, and industry, the Hub is set to drive significant advancements in the critical minerals sector, fostering innovation and facilitating global knowledge exchange.
The India-Australia Critical Minerals Research Hub aims to:
- Enhance capabilities for both India and Australia to mitigate risks and capitalize on opportunities in the critical minerals sector.
- Foster collaboration, partnership, and complementarity as its core principles.
- Bring together leading experts in critical minerals assessment, economic geology, extraction, processing and separation, mining sustainability, and supply chain analysis.
- Facilitate strategic collaboration between industry and government from the outset.
- Promote extensive cooperation with partners from Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia, the UK, and the USA, with the potential to expand into a multilateral hub.
- Establish shared intellectual property (IP) libraries to support R&D investments, reduce duplication, optimize resource allocation, and save time.
- Build upon existing academic collaborations between India and Australia while laying the groundwork for new partnerships.
