IITs selected as NSM nodal centres for training in HPC and AI, invites applications for online HPC course

IITs that were selected as the National Supercomputing Mission’s nodal centres for training in high-performance computing and artificial intelligence, along with C-DAC is now inviting applications for a three-month online course.

IITs that were selected as the National Supercomputing Mission’s nodal centres for training in high-performance computing and artificial intelligence, along with C-DAC is now inviting applications for a three-month online course in High-Performance Computing. The IITs that were selected are IIT Goa, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Madras and IIT Palakkad. While the course is being offered to students at Rs 1000, others can take the online course at Rs 4000.

The course called “HPC Shiksha: Basics of High-Performance Computing” is motivated by the PARAM series of supercomputers. On successful completion of the course, an examination will be held online for participants, and top performers will receive book prizes. Those students who will clear the exam will be awarded a certificate with grades and others will be given the certificated of participation.
The online course aims at equipping learners with the basic concepts of parallel computing and providing them with the knowledge that can help them write parallel programs using industry-standard parallel programming frameworks. Professors from IITs, C-DAC and the industry will conduct the online course.

Some of the topics that will be covered are basic concepts: cores, nodes, threads, processes, performance measurement in sequential programs, cache, the principle of locality, shared memory, distributed memory, communication, measuring performance via communication volume and bandwidth, and so on.
The 13-week long course will be conducted from November 9 to February 5, 2021 from 5 to 6:30 pm. The classes will consist of one hour of lecture followed by half-an-hour of Q and A. The course is most suited for the following candidates: Students doing their PhD, Masters and third and fourth-year undergraduate students from any stream of science and engineering as well as non-students with knowledge on programming in C or Fortran and working knowledge of Linux Operating System.
