JEE Advanced Attempt Case: Supreme Court to Hear Plea Tomorrow

Despite the controversy, other eligibility criteria for JEE Advanced 2025 remain unchanged like candidates must qualify JEE Main and rank among the top 2,50,000, they must have passed Class 12 in 2024 or 2025.
The Supreme Court is set to hear a critical plea on January 6, 2025, concerning the eligibility criteria for the Joint Entrance Examination Advanced (JEE Advanced). The petition, filed by 22 aspirants, challenges the Joint Admission Board's (JAB) recent decision to revert the number of attempts allowed for JEE Advanced from three to two.
JAB Reverses JEE Attempt Limit Amid Controversy
In November 2024, the JAB initially increased the attempt limit for JEE Advanced to three, providing candidates an additional opportunity to qualify for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). However, just weeks later, during its November 15 meeting, the board reinstated the earlier two-attempt policy, citing "competing requirements."
This reversal has left many candidates disheartened, especially those who had adjusted their plans based on the earlier announcement. Aspirants who had left engineering programs or paused their academic pursuits to attempt JEE Advanced for the third time now face uncertainty.
Candidates Challenge JAB Decision
The petitioners argue that the abrupt policy change has disrupted their preparation and jeopardized their academic futures. They are seeking the Supreme Court’s intervention to restore the three-attempt rule for JEE Advanced 2025.
The case has reignited debates about fairness and consistency in examination policies. Candidates who attempted JEE Advanced in 2023 and 2024 had planned to utilize the additional attempt to improve their performance. With the limit now reduced, those hopes have been dashed.
JEE Advanced Exam Details and Eligibility
Despite the controversy, other eligibility criteria for JEE Advanced 2025 remain unchanged:
Candidates must qualify JEE Main and rank among the top 2,50,000.
They must have passed Class 12 in 2024 or 2025.
Age restrictions require general category candidates to be born on or after October 1, 2000, with a five-year relaxation for SC, ST, and PwD categories.
The JEE Advanced 2025, organized by IIT Kanpur, is scheduled for May 18, 2025.
The policy change has intensified competition and preparation pressure for first-time candidates, who must now secure admission within two attempts. Educators and students alike have expressed concerns about the decision's long-term implications on exam fairness and accessibility.
The Supreme Court's ruling tomorrow could provide clarity and direction for thousands of aspirants awaiting a resolution to this contentious issue.
There are two attempts for JEE Advanced. A candidate can attempt JEE Advanced twice in two consecutive years.
Candidates who took the JEE Advanced exam in 2025 can appear again in 2026. Those who will appear for the examn firts time in 2026, will be able to take the exam again in 2027.
