As per news report, a record of 11 lakh candidates has registered for Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main examination for the academic year 2021-22. The National Testing Agency (NTA) will conduct JEE Main 2021 in four sessions- February, March, April and May.  The first session of JEE Main 2021 is scheduled to be held from February 23 to 26 in two shift. The authority has also for the first time included 200 odd engineering colleges (govt and private) of Uttar Pradesh whose admissions will be based on NTA JEE Main 2021 scores. The authority has also notified that JEE Main 2021 registration has been extended to January 23 for the benefit of the candidates who want to apply in those institutes for the admission.

According to media reports, over 6 lakh candidates have registered for the February session of JEE Main 2021 while around 4.8 lakh each is to appear for March, April and May according to NTA sources. With multiple attempts available for candidates in each of the session (February, March, April and May), this will total up to over 20 lakh spread across all the sessions.
According to NTA sources, nearly half of the candidates appearing for JEE Main 2021 have opted for two or more attempts. In the last two years, 9.5 lakh candidates had appeared in 2020 while 10 lakh appeared in 2019.
“ With the candidates taking the exam multiple times, total tests taken is expected to cross at least 20 lakh this year, which means as per present estimate the ratio to each unique candidates to the number of tests take stand at 1:1.8 as against 1:1.2,” said an NTA official.
However, the ratio might change as there will be an option for candidates after February session to opt-out of subsequent sessions or even join which will lead to change in the attempt ratio. After, AKTU announced that the admission to UP technical colleges/institutes will be through JEE Main 2021, the extent of the exam has been increased.

JEE Main 2021 will be held for admission to the undergraduate programmes at NITs, IIITs, SPAs and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs), Institutions/Universities funded/recognized by participating State Governments and other institutions across the country as well as the eligibility for JEE Advanced which is conducted to offer admissions to the IITs in India.
