JEE Main, NEET UG Difficulty Levels Under Review by Centre; Key Updates Soon

The Union government is currently reviewing the difficulty levels of JEE Main and NEET UG, as these exams are often way tougher than the school curriculum. This leads to students’ rising dependency on coaching centres and also adds to students’ mental stress.
The panel, led by Higher Education Secretary Vineet Joshi, will examine how the exam can be realigned with the school curriculum, including NCERTs, to ensure that as many candidates can prepare within their schools. Year after year, parents and students have raised concerns that the competitive nature of these tests increases reliance on coaching centres. The JEE Mains and NEET UG exams are the country’s highly competitive engineering and medical exams that offer direct admission to prestigious institutions.
The panel’s findings are expected to influence the upcoming JEE Main 2026 and NEET UG 2026 exams. While no immediate changes have been announced, the review signals a shift towards making national entrance tests more student-centric.
What to expect?
- Balanced Question Papers: Difficulty levels may be reduced to ensure alignment with the school curriculum.
- Reduced Coaching Dependency: A fairer structure could help aspirants from diverse backgrounds compete without extra financial pressure.
- Well-being of students: Less exam stress may reduce cases of academic burnout and improve overall mental health among candidates.
