What is NTA Score in JEE Mains?

NTA Score is the normalised score or percentile scores released through JEE Main result. These scores are calculated according to performance of candidates in their exam session. To prepare NTA score, a normalisation process has been followed to ensure fairness for all candidates.

NTA score or Percentile score is the percentage of candidates who have scored equal to or below (same or lower raw scores) that particular percentile in exam. For example, 99 percentile will indicate that the candidate has scored better than 99% students who attempt the exam session.

Total Marks in JEE Mains & How to Calculate Percentile Score?

NTA has released the JEE Mains result as NTA score (percentile score). Now, many candidates are wondering how they can calculate their marks in the exam. The total marks in JEE Mains 2026 are 300.

  • To calculate the marks in JEE Mains, candidates have to use the final answer keys that were released today and their response sheet.
  • Cross-check the answers in the response sheet and the final keys to get the final raw marks out of 300. These raw marks are converted to percentile marks by NTA and are shown in the JEE Mains 2026 result.
  • NTA has a fixed formula to convert raw scores into NTA scores or percentile scores. A normalisation process is used to calculate the JEE Main percentile score for both sessions. For calculation, information such as raw scores and the number of candidates in the exam session will be required.

Subject-wise and total raw scores are converted into percentile scores using the formula given below:

nta-percentile-score

How to calculate JEE Main 2026 rank from Percentile?

To convert your JEE Main Percentile into a Rank, you need the following figures:

    1. Your NTA score
    2. Total number of students who have appeared for the exam
    3. Percentage of students below or equal to your marks
    4. Percentage of students above your marks
    5. Number of students above your marks

While the data for the first two aspects are easily available, the figures for the other three data points are difficult to find.

    Let’s assume:

    Your NTA score =

    P

    Total Number of Students =

    N

Percentage of students below or equal to your marks =

    P

For example: if you have secured a 70 percentile in JEE Main, which means that 70% of the candidates who appeared for JEE Main are below or at the same level as you are

Percentage of students above your marks =

    100 - P

Number of students above your marks

    ((100 – P)/100)*N

Now, the formula to calculate JEE Main Rank from Percentile Score is:

    ((100 – P)/100)*N 1

The rank generated will be the probable All India Rank (AIR) you can expect to secure in JEE Main. The actual rank might differ owing to different factors.

Many students and experts reviewed the JEE Mains 2026 session 1 exam as the toughest in recent times, and the results have backed this claim. The JEE Mains result 2026 shows that the number of candidates achieving a 100 percentile has decreased over the past four years.

For session 1 in particular, in 2022, there were 14 candidates scoring a perfect 100 percentile. In 2023, 20 candidates got 100 percentile, in 2024, there were 23 students, and in 2025, there were 14 perfect scorers. In 2026, the number of 100 percentilers is 12. This indicates that the exam difficulty level has risen over the past years, and so has the competition in the JEE Main exam.

JEE Mains Result 2026 OUT LIVE: Why does Marks vs Percentile and Ranks change every year?

The JEE Mains Marks vs. Percentile and Ranks change annually because they are relative measures, not fixed ones. While your raw score (out of 300) stays fixed once the final answer key is out, its "value" in terms of percentile and rank depends on several dynamic factors.

For example, if the paper is easier, more students score higher, raising the "marks bar" for the same percentile. Also, the 100 percentile is always assigned to the highest scorer in a specific shift, regardless of their actual marks. If the topper in one year has 290 marks, your marks are compared against 290; if they score 260, your marks are compared against 260.

Therefore, the marks vs percentile and rank data vary every year.
