KEAM 2025 Rank List Cancelled by Kerala High Court; Minister R Bindu Clarifies on Result Annulment

The ranking system for KEAM 2025 was changed this year. This update was made because students from the Kerala state board were losing marks under the previous system. However, the new ranking method has been challenged in the high court because it seems to negatively impact students who followed the CBSE or ICSE curriculums. Read the high court's decision below.
In a major update for KEAM 2025 candidates, the Kerala High Court has cancelled the KEAM 2025 rank list for Engineering and Pharmacy courses. The court found issues in the way Class 12 marks were used along with KEAM 2025 exam scores to prepare the rank list. This decision has confused many students who are waiting for admissions through the KEAM counselling 2025.
Why the KEAM 2025 Rank List has been Cancelled
The revised weightage for KEAM 2025 rank list preparation drew strong criticism from across students and parents, who claimed it to be unfair. The petition filed by Hana Fatima Ahnus, a student who had appeared for the KEAM 2025 exam, stated that the weightage criteria were made after the release of the examโs prospectus. The court termed this โan illegal move.โ
The court ruled against the government's change in the exam prospectus, which had altered the subject weightage for ranking students. Previously, marks were considered in a 1:1:1 ratio across Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. However, the prospectus introduced a new ratio of 5:3:2, giving more weight to Mathematics, followed by Physics and Chemistry.
The court ruled that the change was implemented without adequate justification or transparency and that the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE) had a moral obligation to inform students of such major changes well in advance. It concluded that the reordering of ranks based on the 5:3:2 formula was unjust and directed that the KEAM rankings be annulled and recalculated using the earlier 1:1:1 subject weightage.
New KEAM Rank List to Be Published
Passing the order, Justice D.K. Singh stated that the revised method in KEAM 2025 to calculate the ranks adversely affected students who studied the CBSE or ICSE syllabus in their higher secondary classes. The Court has now asked the Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE) to prepare a new KEAM 2025 rank list based on the earlier 1:1:1 subject weightage.
Minister R Bindu Responds
After the High Courtโs verdict, Kerala Higher Education Minister R Bindu clarified that:
We have not received the court order yet. Once it is received, the cabinet will discuss and decide the next steps. There is also an option to appeal. A formula that ensures fairness to all students was implemented, especially considering the 35-mark gap seen in last yearโs standardisation process. For instance, even a student who secured full marks under the Kerala syllabus could lose up to 35 marks due to the old system.
She added that the revised formula was introduced only after cabinet approval, with full transparency. She emphasised that:
โThere is no vested interest here only a desire to ensure justice for all children,โ
How the KEAM 2025 Rank List Was Earlier Calculated
The KEAM scores and rank list will be valid till the closing date of admission as prescribed by the Hon'ble Supreme Court / Central councils / Universities concerned. After the announcement of KEAM scores, the candidates are asked to submit the 10+2 scores. CEE will give 50:50 weightage to the KEAM scores and the 10+2 marks to prepare the rank list. Once the scores are calculated, the candidates are ranked in order of merit. The KEAM rank lists PDF will be published separately for Engineering, Architecture, B.Pharma MBBS / BDS / BHMS / BSMS / BUMS / Agriculture / Forestry / Veterinary / Co-operation & Banking / Climate Change & Environmental Science / B.Tech Biotechnology (under KAU) / Fisheries and B.A. MS will be published.
No, candidates cannot request for revaluation or rechecking of KEAM result. A fully computerised system is used for evaluation of answers and for the preparation of the rank lists and various merit lists. There is no provision for revaluation or rechecking of answer sheets as the evaluation or scoring will be error-free. No correspondence in this regard will be entertained.
Previously, class 12 marks were considered in a 1:1:1 ratio across Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. However, the prospectus introduced a new ratio of 5:3:2, giving more weight to Mathematics, followed by Physics and Chemistry, to prepare the KEAM 2025 rank list.
What Students Should Do Now
A revised KEAM 2025 rank list is expected to be released soon, and the KEAM counselling dates might get further delayed. Students should keep checking the official KEAM website (cee.kerala.gov.in) for the latest updates. This decision affects more than 75,000 KEAM 2025 candidates who are waiting for Engineering and Pharmacy admissions.
