The President of India Droupadi Murmu launched the nation's first home-grown and cost-effective gene therapy for cancer treatment. During the launch of the "CAR-T cell therapy" at IIT Bombay, President Murmu expressed positivity that this treatment would offer a new lease on life to many patients.
Speaking on the occasion, the President said that CAR-T cell therapy is considered to be one of the most phenomenal advances in medical science. It has been available in the developed nations for some time, but it is extremely costly, and beyond the reach of most patients around the world.
She was happy to note that the therapy being launched today is the world’s most affordable CAR-T cell therapy. She said that it is also an example of the ‘Make in India’ initiative; a shining example of the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’.
The President also highlighted IIT Bombay's global and national reputation as a pinnacle of technological education. She emphasised that in creating CAR-T cell therapy, technology was harnessed to serve humanity, fostering collaborations with distinguished entities from different sectors and the industrial realm.
This achievement, she noted, stemmed from IIT Bombay's three-decade emphasis on research and development. She further remarked that the collective expertise and capabilities of IIT Bombay's faculty and students, along with those from similar institutions, will significantly propel India forward amidst the ongoing technological revolution.
