Shiksha Exclusive: Ireland Offers 2-Year Post-Study Visa for PG Students, 1-Year for UG–Education Minister James Lawless

Ireland’s Education Minister James Lawless, during his visit to India, emphasized the strengthening academic collaborations between the two nations and positioned Ireland as a preferred study destination for Indian students.
In an interaction with Shiksha.com, Ireland’s Minister for Higher Education, Research, and Innovation, James Lawless, discusses the growing educational ties between Ireland and India, opportunities for Indian students, and Ireland’s focus on research, innovation, and STEM education.
Q: Minister Lawless, could you share the purpose of your visit to India?
James Lawless: I am in India as part of a trade mission, and every year around St. Patrick’s Day, Ireland sends government representatives worldwide to strengthen our global connections. As the Minister for Higher Education, Research, and Innovation, I see immense potential in strengthening the Ireland-India relationship, especially in these fields. I’m visiting Indian universities, including IIT Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai, to explore collaborative opportunities and highlight what Ireland offers Indian students.
Q: What makes Ireland an attractive study destination for Indian students?
James Lawless: There are multiple factors. Ireland has a well-established university system with traditional universities like Trinity College Dublin and a growing sector of technological universities (TUs). TUs focus on industry-aligned education, offering flexible and innovative courses in emerging fields like AI, data analytics, and cybersecurity.
Indian students form the largest international student community in Ireland, with over 9,000 currently enrolled. They pursue programs in STEM, business, healthcare, and emerging technologies. Moreover, Ireland is an English-speaking country in the EU, making it a great gateway to Europe for students and professionals alike.
Q: What are the post-study work opportunities for Indian students in Ireland?
James Lawless: Ireland has a welcoming post-study work environment. Postgraduate students get a two-year stay-back visa, while undergraduate students get one year. Given our low unemployment rate—below 4%—graduates, particularly those in STEM and healthcare fields, are in high demand. Many students transition seamlessly into employment after their studies.
Q: How does Ireland support international students in terms of affordability?
James Lawless: Education in Ireland is cost-competitive compared to countries like the UK and the US. We offer scholarships and financial assistance programs that help offset tuition and living expenses. While global inflation and geopolitical factors have impacted the cost of living, our government has introduced cost-of-living packages, including support for energy and food prices, to ease financial burdens.
Q: Can you elaborate on research and innovation collaborations between Indian and Irish institutions?
James Lawless: Research and innovation are at the heart of Ireland’s education strategy. Our universities prioritize R&D across various fields, from AI and sustainability to healthcare and engineering. I recently met with IIT Delhi’s Dean of Research and international collaboration teams, where we discussed potential partnerships in AI, climate science, and advanced engineering. We’re also exploring initiatives under the Erasmus+ program to facilitate student exchanges and international research projects.
Q: What is your message to Indian students considering Ireland for higher education?
James Lawless: Ireland is open for business and education. We value our long-standing ties with India and want to welcome more Indian students. Our education system emphasizes research, industry collaboration, and career opportunities. Whether you’re looking for a high-quality education, post-study work options, or a gateway to European markets, Ireland is an excellent choice. We are committed to strengthening our academic and cultural partnerships with India in the years to come.
