WBJEE 2026: Jadavpur University Proposes Independent BTech Counselling to Avoid Admission Delays
WBJEE 2026: Jadavpur University has proposed to start it’s own BTech counselling after WBJEE results to avoid admission delays and vacant seats. Check latest updates here
WBJEE 2026: Jadavpur University may soon begin its own counselling process for BTech admissions after announcement of result of West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE). The move aims to avoid delays that affected BTech admission process last year. However, the proposal still requires approval from the Government of West Bengal, and it is not yet clear if it will be implemented this year.
As per media report, a senior professor said, the proposal was prepared by Faculty Council of Engineering and Technology and submitted to state government for review. While Jadavpur University has taken the initiative, it is waiting for official approval from the authorities before moving forward. A similar proposal was discussed last year, but it did not receive approval at that time.

Many Seats Remained Vacant Last Year in Jadavpur University
In the last admission cycle, more than 150 out of 1,308 BTech seats at Jadavpur University remained vacant even after centralised counselling rounds were completed. To fill these seats, the university later had to organise its own BTech counselling process. Officials believe starting the counselling earlier this year could help avoid such vacancies.
University authorities also mentioned that an independent counselling process may help attract high-ranking candidates. Often, delays in the centralised counselling system lead them to choose private colleges or institutions in other states.
OBC Quota Row Delayed WBJEE Counselling Last Year
Last year, WBJEE counselling process was delayed because the results of WBJEE were postponed following a legal dispute over OBC reservations in West Bengal. The issue arose after a ruling by Calcutta High Court questioned validity of several OBC categories introduced after 2010. This decision created uncertainty around the state’s reservation policy and delayed both the WBJEE results and the counselling schedule. This delay affected admissions in several government engineering colleges that rely on WBJEE scores, including
- Jadavpur University
- Government College of Engineering and Ceramic Technology
- Government College of Engineering and Leather Technology
Faculty members had earlier warned that long delays in admissions could disrupt academic calendar. They also expressed concern that talented students might opt for private institutions if the process is postponed repeatedly. University officials stated that starting BTech counselling earlier will help begin classes on time and reduce vacancies in engineering programmes.
