Jawaharlal Nehru University's (JNU) consideration of reinstating its in-house entrance exams for PhD admissions

In light of recent disruptions caused by the cancellation of the UGC National Eligibility Test (UGC NET) due to paper leak concerns, Delhi University (DU) has clarified its stance on PhD admissions. The central government canceled the UGC NET exam, originally scheduled for June 8, 2024, prompting confusion among PhD aspirants regarding the admission processes at various institutions.

Despite Jawaharlal Nehru University's (JNU) consideration of reinstating its in-house entrance exams for PhD admissions, DU Vice Chancellor Yogesh Singh has confirmed that DU will not be following suit. On Sunday, Singh stated, "We have no plans to conduct a separate PhD entrance exam. We will follow the suggestions of the UGC. We have not received any information from the National Testing Agency (NTA) and are waiting for their guidance."

The postponement and subsequent cancellation of the UGC NET exam were due to integrity concerns raised by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) found that the irregularities were due to tampered screenshots rather than an actual paper leak, used by culprits to manipulate the exam's integrity for financial gain.

Singh acknowledged the possibility of a delay in the academic session for PhD programs, potentially by a month, due to these disruptions. Nevertheless, DU remains committed to adhering to UGC guidelines and ensuring a fair and transparent admission process for all candidates.

The UGC NET is now rescheduled to take place from August 2 to September 4, 2024, aiming to restore confidence and maintain the integrity of the examination process for both teaching posts and PhD admissions.
