Delhi University's Academic Council held a meeting during which it deliberated upon key pending issues, including the introduction of the Common University Entrance Test (CUET) for post-graduate (PG) programmes, the syllabi for the second semester of various undergraduate courses and others.
According to the meeting agenda, the syllabi of over 100 undergraduate courses was taken up for deliberations by the academic council. These courses include BA (Hons) Geography, BA (Hons) Economics, BA (Hons) Philosophy, BSc Electronic Science, BSc (Hons) Mathematics and BSc (Hons) Operational Research, among others.
Approves Proposal For Postgraduate Admission Through CUET
During the meeting, Delhi University's academic council gave nod to hold postgraduate admission through the Common University Entrance Test from the next academic cycle.
As per the current enrollment process, 50 per cent of admissions are done directly for students who did their bachelor's degrees from Delhi University on the basis of their qualifying examinations. The remaining 50 per cent seats are filled based on candidates' ranks in the DU postgraduate entrance test. "The AC has approved to recommend PG admissions through CUET with half of the seats remaining under merit-based admission for students of DU," the council member said, as per reports.
Second-Semester Syllabus Of Four-Year Undergraduate Programmes
The DU's academic council also approved the second-semester syllabus of four-year undergraduate programmes based on the Undergraduate Curriculum Framework. "The Academic Council has approved the syllabi of the second semester of undergraduate courses," a council member said. The matter will now be taken up by the university's Executive Council, its top decision-making body.
Resolution On Teacher-Student Ratio passed
The DU's academic council also passed the resolution on the teacher-student ratio. The resolution was passed even with six members dissenting against it saying the move to increase the student-teacher ratio will impact the quality of education.
The dissenting members said that "the raising of the tutorial group size to 30 students for UG courses and 25 for PG courses negates the very idea of small group interaction and denies students the opportunity to develop a deeper understanding and clarify niggling doubts."
"Teachers too cannot do justice and the consequent quality deterioration would be enormous. Similarly, increasing the size of practical to 25 students and 15-20 students in cases of UG courses and PG courses, respectively is academically unacceptable," the members said in a dissent note.
