Nagaland University Latest News and Updates

Nagaland University is going to have a new Indian Knowledge System (IKS) research centre. This center will investigate traditional farming water techniques and indigenous food patterns among Nagaland's tribal people. They have developed unique water management techniques for producing and cooking traditional meals that have been passed down through generations. These approaches are crucial for their agriculture and culture as they allow sustainability and development without compromising nature and its elements.

The Indian Knowledge Systems division of the Ministry of Education, based at AICTE in New Delhi, promotes programs like these.  It seeks to preserve India's traditional knowledge in a variety of fields, including science, art, agriculture, and technology.

Nagaland, being a hub of many tribal communities, offers a variety of sustainability across the tribal community. Prof. Jagadish K. Patnaik, Vice-Chancellor of Nagaland University, stated that the research facility will help document and distribute ancient tribal knowledge, which will benefit in sustainable development. He added that the institution will be able to advise community members on how to enhance their practices.  This is especially crucial given climate change.

Traditional water system techniques such as collecting rainwater in wooden tanks, step farming in hills, managing spring water and bamboo pipe building and others help in farming and saving nature.

The lead of the research centre, Dr  Chitrasen Lairenjam, highlighted that the project will study how farmers use these methods and how they can be improved. The aim is to preserve and pass on this knowledge for the future.
