The Human Resource and Development Minister, Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ announced the latest changes made in Prime Minister’s Research Fellows (PMRF May 2020). The Ministry of Human Resource and Development under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the PMRF Scheme in 2019. The vision behind the launch of the scheme was to improve the quality of research in various higher educational institutions in the country. With attractive fellowships, the scheme seeks to attract the best talent into research thereby realizing the vision of development through innovation.
Talking about the changes made in the scheme, the HRD Minister in his latest tweets stated, “To increase the uptake of the fellowship, several changes have been made in the selection process of Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship so that more number of students can avail the benefit under the Scheme.”
The minister further added that the required GATE score is now reduced to 650 from 750 apart from minimum CGPA of 8 or equivalent, for the students from any recognized institute/university (other than IISc/ IITs/NITs/IISERs/IIEST/CF IIITs).
The selection process will be conducted through two channels of entries- first, Direct and second, Lateral. Students who are pursuing PhD in PMRF granting institutions can also apply. However, s/he must have completed 12 or 24 months in the programme.
Talking further, Mr Pokhriyal also stated, “NITs that hold a ranking among the top 25 institutions as per NIRF rankings, can also become PMRF granting institution.

The list of prominent institutes that grants PMRF scheme is given below:
- IISc, Bengaluru
- All IISERs
- All IITs
- Jawaharlal Nehru University
- Banaras Hindu University
- University of Hyderabad
- Aligarh Muslim University
- Jamia Millia Islamia
- University of Delhi
- National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli
The candidates will be selected through a rigorous selection process and their performance will be reviewed suitably through a national convention. Starting Academic Year 2020-21, interested candidates can apply for PMRF May 2020 through either of the two channels i.e. Direct and Lateral.
