There are a total of seven IISER institutes in India which provide admissions to the research-based courses at UG, PG and Phd Level. Indian Institute of Science Education (IISER) is the top institution for Science and research education in India. There are seven IISERs, including IISER Berhampur, IISER Bhopal, IISER Kolkata, IISER Mohali, IISER Pune, IISER Thiruvananthapuram, and IISER Tirupati. IISERs are established by the Government of India.

How to Get Admission in IISERs?

Admission to IISER is based on the IISER Aptitude Test (IAT) rank. Candidates who wish to pursue UG programs at IISER need to appear and qualify IAT. Postgraduate and PhD course admissions are based on the IIT JAM and JEST. There might be a department exam or an interview for PhD courses. The notification regarding admission will be released on the IISER website. Students who fulfil the eligibility criteria should follow the admission process for IISER admission.

Aspirants can get admission to undergraduate programs at  IISERs based on their performance in the IISER Entrance Exam. The science entrance exam will be conducted on June 7, 2026. The IISER exam duration is three hours and consists of questions from four subjects:

IISER Pune

A research-intensive teaching institute, IISER Pune, was established in 2006 and started functioning from its NCL campus. Now, IISER Pune is spread across an area of 98 acres. The current campus of IISER Pune has 37,000 sq m of academic space in addition to 80,000 sq m of residential space.

IISER Pune is a member of the Association of Indian Universities, and since its inception, the institute has published 2,000 research papers. Facilities offered at IISER Pune include Research Labs (Physics, Chemistry, Biology), National Facility for Gene Function in Health and Disease (NFGFHD), Library, Career Development Centre (CDC) and hostels. The library at IISER Pune houses 25,000 books, 6,000 e-books, 3,000 e-journals, 50 print journals, 250 PhD thesis, 759, MS thesis and 4,000 digital repository books.

IISER Kolkata

Established in 2006 by the Government of India, IISER Kolkata is functioning from its main campus located in Mohanpur, Nadia. IISER Kolkata has three hostels, which are the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Hall, the Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar Hall and the Nivedita Hall. The library at IISER Kolkata has more than 29,000 books; this number includes 16,500+ print books and 13,000+ e-books.

Apart from this, research facilities available at IISER Kolkata include CHN Analyzer, Digital Polarimeter (Rudolph), Electronic Paramagnetic Resonance Spectrometer (EPR), Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionisation (MALDI), Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM), Fluorescence-Lifetime Imaging Microscopy (FLIM), Fluorescence Spectrometer, Get Permeation Chromatograph (GPC), High-Performance Liquid Chromatograph, and the like.

IISER Mohali

Established in 2007 with a batch of 25 students, IISER Mohali only offered BS-MS dual degree programme to aspirants. In 2008, the institute started offering a PhD programme and in 2012 integrated PhD programme.

Established in 2015, IISER Tirupathi was the sixth institute to be established by the Government under the chain of IISERs. The permanent campus of IISER Tirupathi is close to IIT Tirupati. IISER Tirupati offers a hostel facility to its students. The hostel on the campus of IISER Tirupati has 184 rooms.
