CTET Eligibility Likely to Become Compulsory for Teaching Classes 9 to 12

CTET Eligibility Likely to Become Compulsory for Teaching Classes 9 to 12

CTET 2025: In a major shift aimed at enhancing the quality of teaching in higher school levels, the Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET) will soon be made mandatory for aspiring teachers of classes 9 to 12. As of now, to teach students of classes 9 to 12, candidates must have a B.Ed degree along with a post-graduation qualification in the relevant subject. The CTET exam is currently held only for two levels: Paper I: Classes 1 to 5 and Paper II: Classes 6 to 8.

As per some media reports and trends on X (formerly) Twitter, the draft guidelines for conducting CTET for higher classes are currently being prepared by the NCTE in consultation with CBSE. After approval, these guidelines are expected to be notified soon. Authorities plan to announce the new CTET level later this year.

CTET 2025 to Cover Higher Classes

As per media reports, the Ministry of Education, through the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) and the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), is working towards introducing CTET 2025 for classes 9 to 12. This move is aligned with the reforms proposed under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which stresses the need for better teacher eligibility standards at all school levels.

Implementation in CBSE-Affiliated Schools

Once the notification for CTET 2025 is released, qualifying in the exam will become compulsory for teaching classes 9 to 12 in all schools affiliated with CBSE, including:

  • Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs)
  • Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs)
  • Other CBSE-recognised institutions

Why is there a Delay in the release of CTET 2025 Notification?

The introduction of a new CTET paper requires:

  • Revision of eligibility criteria
  • Development of a detailed syllabus and exam structure
  • Approval from relevant government bodies

Officials have cited these preparatory steps as the main reasons for the slight delay. However, once guidelines are finalised, the CTET for 9 to 12 is expected to be implemented without further postponement.

As per media reports, CTET (CBSE) Director JK Yadav said, 'The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP) has a guideline to conduct examinations at four levels. NCTE is preparing its policy. CBSE has to conduct the examination on the basis of the same guidelines. After receiving the guidelines, the examination will be conducted at four levels. Probably it will be implemented from next year.'
