IES Prelims Exam 2020

UPSC is conducting the IES prelims exam today, in two sessions, to recruit the candidates for the Engineering Services across various government departments. It is the highest technical services exam conducted by UPSC for engineering graduates. IES exam is conducted in three phases and the IES prelims exam is the first phase among them all. As per the UPSC, the number of applicants in the IES Exam was 346773 in the year 2017-18.

IES Prelims 2020 General Studies Analysis

IES Prelims General Studies paper has followed its previous year trends and was on par with the standards of UPSC IES prelims exam. The IES Prelims 2020 General Studies paper was moderate in nature and some of the questions were very easy.

Current Issues of National and International Important

Last year, Indian Economy topics were asked and so was this year. The fundamental of Indian Economy were asked. Various concepts were in news lately and were asked in the IES Prelims General Studies paper. The questions were of moderate in natures. The number of questions was 10-12.

Engineering Aptitude covering Logical reasoning and Analytical ability

The questions asked from this section were easy to solve and the candidates find this section scoring. The time was the factor to solve these questions. The difficulty level of this section is easy and the number of questions asked was 10-12.

Engineering Mathematics and Numerical Analysis

The questions asked from this topic were easy in nature and the number of questions was 8-10 in number. The candidates find them easy to solve. The Mathematics questions were easy in comparison to the previous years.

General Principles of Design, Drawing, Importance of Safety

This topic followed the trend set in previous years. Some of the questions can be termed as difficult in this section and the rest of the question was on par with the previous year standards. The overall difficulty level of this section is moderate to difficult and the number of questions asked was 6-8.

Standards and Quality practices

There were out of the box questions from the standard and quality topic and the questions were analytically designed which require on the spot thinking. This section surprised various candidates and was tricky to solve. The difficulty level of this section was moderate to difficult and the number of questions asked was 8-10.

Basics of Energy and Environment

This year in the IES prelims exam, the number of questions from the energy and environment topics were increased. Majority of questions were based on the environmental concepts and the conservation part. Questions based on Waste disposal methods, Basel Convention and the likes were asked. The number of questions was 12-14. 

Basics of Project Management

Project management questions were large in number. The questions asked were moderate in nature and some questions were really difficult in nature. The overall number of questions from this topic will be around 13-15. Some of the numerical questions were really tough.

Basics of Material Science and Engineering

There were some questions asked from the topics which were not very regular in the IES exam and the students were surprised due to that. The questions from Chemistry and its bonding concept was a surprise and candidates find it difficult to answer. The overall difficulty level of the questions was moderate to difficult. The number of questions asked was around 9-12.

Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) based tools

The number of questions from this section are increasing over the past few years. With the impetus on ICT based tools, IES prelims also asked about the advanced ICT based tools which can benefit the society as a whole. The overall difficulty level of questions can be termed as moderate to difficult and the number of questions asked was 11-13.

Ethics and values in Engineering profession

Good number of questions were asked from the Ethics topic and were of easy in nature. Each year, the number of questions from Ethics are increasing in the IES prelims exam. Around 14 -15 questions were asked from the Ethics topic. The difficulty level of the questions was moderate to difficult.

As per the inputs given by the candidates, we will define the number of questions and section-wise difficulty level of the question paper.

It is mentioned in the official notifications that the marks for each topic may range from 5% to 15% of the total marks in the paper.

IES Prelims 2020 Paper II Analysis

IES Paper II is engineering subject-specific paper. It is also an objective type question paper. There are four subjects in the IES Prelims exam. They are as follows.

  • Civil
  • Mechanical
  • Electrical 
  • Electronics and Communication

There are 150 questions in the IES prelims engineering subject paper. Here also, there is a provision of penalty on giving wrong answers. The quantum of penalty is the same as explained above.
