Teachers Body urge Government for Plea against Supreme Court Order on TET Exam

In a recent development, the School Teachers’ Federation of India (STFI), teachers' body, has requested the Central Government to take action on the Supreme Court verdict that makes the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) mandatory for teachers and gives two years’ time to in-service teachers to clear TET exam. The STFI gave representations to the Prime Minister, the Union Education Minister and the Education Secretary on how this SC order on TET exam affects the jobs of around 25 lakh teachers. The federation argued that this TET ruling should be applicable only for teachers appointed after the implementation of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009. The body further requested the centre to make amendments to Section 23 of the RTE Act, 2009 and file a review petition against the SC ruling.

Supreme Court Ruling on TET Exam

The apex court of India, in its ruling dated September 1, 2025, made TET exam mandatory for teachers appointed before the implementation of the RTE Act, 2009. The SC gave two years’ time to in-service teachers for obtaining the TET certificate. In failing to clear the TET exam, these teachers will have to face compulsory retirement. One can appear for any TET exam such as Central Teacher Eligibility Test (CTET), MAHA TET, TS TET, UPTET and others, whichever is applicable to their service.
