West Bengal Public Service Commission (WBPSC) has released the West Bengal Civil Services (WBCS) notification 2020 on November 4, 2019. WBCS 2020 notification is published in PDF format and is released for the executive posts only. Last date to apply for WBCS 2020 is November 25, 2019.

The preliminary exam for WBCS 2020 is tentatively scheduled for February 9 in pen- and paper-based format. This article covers all the important details on WBCS 2020 Exam, its application process, eligibility criteria, scheme of examination, etc.

Important Dates for WBCS 2020

The online application window for WBCS 2020 opens on November 5, 2019. The detailed schedule for the start of the application process and subsequent events is tabulated below

WBCS Application 2020

WBCS application form can be submitted in online mode only. The official notification clearly states that “Submission of more than one application by the same candidate is strictly forbidden and such applications are liable to cancellation.”

Candidates cannot change the preference for services filled in the WBCS application form at later stages of the exam. All the candidates are therefore strongly advised to provide preference for services carefully and scrutinize all the details thoroughly before submitting WBCS Application form.

WBCS 2020 Application Fee

WBCS 2020 application fee is Rs 210 for candidates from the unreserved category and backward classes (BC). In addition to the examination fee, service charge of 1% is also payable with minimum amount being Rs 5. The service charge will be payable only for the online transactions.

Candidates belonging to SC and ST categories are exempted from paying any application fee. Persons with disabilities (PwD) with physical disability of 40 per cent and above are also exempted from any fee payment.

WBCS 2020 Vacancies 

Total number of vacancies is not mentioned in the official WBCS notification 2020. The WBCS exam 2020 will be conducted for six Group A services including WBCS, West Bengal Police Service Group B service, nine Group C services and three Group D services. Candidates can apply for multiple services notified by the commission.

Eligibility Criteria for WBCS 2020 Exam

The minimum eligibility to apply for WBCS 2020 is a degree in a relevant discipline from a recognised university. Besides, candidates must also meet the age limit criteria as defined below to appear in the WBCS Exam.

  • The lower age limit is 21 years and upper age limit is 36 years as on January 1 of the year of examination (January 1, 2020).
  • In other words, the candidate should not have been born before January 2, 1984, and not later than January 1, 1999.
  • Age relaxation is given to the candidates from reserved categories as per the official regulations mentioned in the table below:

WBCS Scheme of Exam

WBCS is a two-stage examination process. While stage I is the written examination, stage II will be the personality test. The written examination is again divided into two phases - Preliminary and Mains Exam.

WBCS Prelims exam is primarily a screening test that is designed to shortlist candidates for the WBCS Main examination. The marks obtained in the WBCS Prelims Exam is not considered for preparing final merit list. WBCS Prelims exam contains 200 objective type questions and total time allotted is 150 Minutes. Each objective type question carries one mark and hence the total marks allotted for the WBCS exam is 200. 

The WBCS Prelims Exam 2020 will have questions from the following topics:

The WBCS Main Exam 2020 will be descriptive comprising six compulsory papers and one optional subject having two papers. Out of the six compulsory papers, General Studies I, General Studies II, Paper of the Constitution of India and Indian Economy including role and functions of the Reserve Bank of India and the Paper of Arithmetic and Test of Reasoning will be objective. Rest of the papers will be descriptive. Each paper, compulsory or optional, will carry 200 marks and will be of 3 hours duration.

Candidates shortlisted after the WBCS Main Exam will be called forth for the personality test. The final result for WBCS 2020 will be declared based on preparation of final merit list which takes into consideration the combined performance in the Main exam and personality test.

Negative Marking in WBCS 2020 Exam

There shall be negative marking for each incorrect response to multiple-choice questions (MCQ Type). The quantum of negative marking is not mentioned in the official notification and will be notified at the time of paper.

A deduction of 10% from full marks may be made from the total marks secured by a candidate in a particular paper, if they disclose their identity by writing the name, roll no. or by indicating any identifying marks in the answer script.
