
Responding to a question on the total number of students who appeared for CUET 2024 - subject-wise, State-wise, along with the total number of subject-tests given; the Minister of State for Education provided comprehensive data on CUET (UG) 2024 examination.
The Ministry of Education, Department of Higher Education, has released detailed statistics on the recently concluded Common University Entrance Test (CUET) UG 2024, based on a question raised in the Rajya Sabha.
Responding to a question on the total number of students who appeared for CUET 2024 - subject-wise, State-wise, along with the total number of subject-tests given; the Minister of State for Education, Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, provided comprehensive data on the participation and structure of the CUET (UG) 2024 examination.
The Minister informed, the CUET (UG) 2024 saw an impressive turnout, with 13,47,819 candidates registering for the exam. The National Testing Agency (NTA) facilitated the examination in a hybrid mode, incorporating both Computer-Based Test (CBT) and traditional pen-and-paper formats. A diverse range of 63 subjects was offered, with candidates opting for a staggering 57,95,211 combinations.
Key Highlights:
Examination Mode: While the majority of subjects were tested via CBT, the examination for specific subjects, including Chemistry, Biology, English, General Test, Economics, Hindi, Physics, Mathematics, Geography, Physical Education, Business Studies, Accountancy, History, Political Science, and Sociology, was conducted in pen-and-paper mode.
Subject Combinations and Choices: Each candidate was permitted to choose up to six subjects, which could include both Indian and foreign languages along with the General Test. The average number of subject tests per candidate, based on registration data, is 4.28, while the actual appeared data reflects an average of 3.43 subject tests per candidate.
University Participation: A total of 297 universities across the country participated in CUET (UG) 2024, emphasizing the test's extensive reach and importance in the higher education landscape.
State-wise Registration: The state-wise registration data reveals significant participation from various states. Uttar Pradesh led with 3,47,736 candidates, followed by Delhi with 1,56,412 candidates, and Bihar with 99,835 candidates. Haryana and Jharkhand also saw high participation, with 59,490 and 90,568 candidates respectively. Notably, there were also 530 registrations from outside India.
The numbers for choosing CUET subjects is five out of the 37 options available.

Section 2- (23 domain- specific subjects) Accountancy/ Book Keeping, Biology/ Biological Studies/ Biotechnology/Biochemistry, Business Studies, Chemistry, Computer Science/ Informatics Practices, Economics/ Business Economics, Geography/Geology, History, Home Science, Knowledge Tradition and Practices of India, Environmental Science, Mathematics, Physical Education/ NCC /Yoga, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Agriculture, Mass Media/ Mass Communication, Anthropology, Fine Arts/ Visual Arts (Sculpture/ Painting)/Commercial Arts, Performing Arts – (i) Dance (Kathak/ Bharatnatyam/ Oddisi/ Kathakali/Kuchipudi/ Manipuri (ii) Drama- Theatre (iii) Music General (Hindustani/ Carnatic/ Rabindra Sangeet/ Percussion/ Non-Percussion), Sanskrit [For all Shastri (Shastri 3 years/ 4 years Honours), and Tourism
Section 3- General test
National Testing Agency will commence CUET 2026 registration in first week of March. Soon after the release of the CUET notification candidates candidates can check the important dates pertaining to CUET 2026. The last date for CUET 2026 registration will be notiifed aling with the last date for payment of fee.
Candidats will be required to fill the CUET application form within the given time frame, failing which no request for extension of the CUET registration last date will be entertained. NTA does not provide the window for late fee payment. CUET 2026 application process will be in online mode. No physical copies of the CUET application form must be sent to the authorities.
