The Tamil Nadu State Council for Higher Education (TANSCHE) has proposed 75 per cent of the common syllabus across all the state colleges from the academic year 2023-24. However, autonomous colleges are not very happy with the move. They are now worried that they will lose academic freedom to frame curriculum and conduct exams.

While speaking on the same, Thomas Amirtham, Principal of Loyola College said, "We understand the TANSCHE'S objective IN introducing a model syllabus throughout the state. However, it should be implemented without affecting the autonomy given to autonomous colleges," as reported by TOI. "Autonomous colleges should be given greater autonomy to compete at global level," he added.

Meanwhile, A Ramasamy, Vice Chairman, TANSCHE, said, " the move is aimed to bring uniformity in assessment of students in all arts and science colleges in the state be it government, government-aided or self-financing colleges.”

While showcasing concern over Autonomous colleges losing their identity, freedom and flexibility, Madras Christian College, Principal, Paul Wilson, said, "Autonomous colleges will lose their identity, freedom and flexibility if they implement the common syllabus and weightage system for assessment."
