Michigan State University was established in 1855. It is the nation's pioneer land-grant university. It was initially called as Agricultural College of the State of Michigan. In 1861, its name changed to State Agricultural College. Then, in 1909, the name of the college changed to Michigan Agricultural College. In 1925, Michigan State College of Agriculture and Applied Science and then, in 1955, it became Michigan State University of Agriculture and Applied Science. Finally, in 1964, the university became Michigan State University.

MSU international students are eligible to live in the university residence halls or university apartments. The university is home to 27 residence halls and 3 apartment communities. Students are required to live on-campus for their first four semester at the university. For international first-year students, the food and housing expenses is estimated to be around USD 13,079 (Around INR 11 lakh) for 2024-25.

It is located in East Lansing. The university is one of the top research universities in the world and offers 400+ programs of study across 17-degree granting colleges.

Lansing's Capital Regional International Airport is 12 miles from MSU. Free hotel shuttles may be available. Additionally, students can use Uber, Lyft, and taxi services from the airport to reach the university. A larger airport near the university is Detroit Metropolitan University. It is 85 miles from this airport to East Lansing.

Admission to UG courses of Michigan State University is competitive, however, there are no minimum requirements. The entering class of 2023 had a high school GPA 3.5-4.0. Other details for the Fall 2023 Class profile are:

  • Total SAT score: 1100-1310
  • Composite ACT: 24-30

Since there are no minimum requirements for UG courses, and the data for the entering class specifies a higher GPA than 2.5, it is advised to students to aim for a GPA of 3.5 or higher.
