The University of Phoenix was founded in 1976 by John Sperling & John Murphy in Phoenix Arizona. The institute started in a rented office space went on to grow into a fully-accredited university offering education to thousands of undergraduate & postgraduate students.

The University of Phoenix started when John Sperling rented space in the Boilermaker's union hall, recruited lawyers & opened for business. The institute started with eight students, each being a working adult looking for a way to finish their respective higher education.
Almost 10 years to its opening, the institute had 6,000 students & by 1989, it started offering courses in the online format.
The ownership: Apollo Group, went public in the year 1994 & in 2004, its stock hit an all-time high of nearly USD 100 per share. Following which the business declined amidst a string of controversies & slowly phased to online operations.

According to the Federal Trade Commission, the University of Phoenix was found to have relied on deceptive advertising, falsely claiming to have a recruitment network comprising of organizations such as Adobe, Microsoft, Twitter (now X) & Yahoo, to attract students.
The institute's claims of having a curriculum designed to land jobs in the above mentioned organizations were also found to be false & the institute was charged with a settlement of millions of dollars as a result.
