Design Engineers are required in almost every sector be it automobile, aerospace, shipping, construction, IC design, medical equipments, sports gears and office accessories etc. Industrial designers also carry out extensive research on latest design trends, market values, safety, texture, shape, safety weight and materials to be used before designing a product.
An industrial designer can get recruited as CAD engineer, CAID engineer, graphic designer, ceramic designer, automobile designer, public utility equipments designer, appliances and house ware designer or quality control designer. Even the Government of India recruits a large number of designers. You can also work as a research and development professional with various companies in the electronics and telecom equipment sector.
Product designers, especially those with an engineering background, are recruited by R&D departments of manufacturing companies and design consultants/ firms.
Pay Scales are dependent on the type of organization you are selected in.

If yes, you may opt any of the following course
Undergraduate Program in Automobile Design – 3 years duration
XII'th Arts or Science or Commerce, or
3 Year full-time Diploma in engineering or
1 Year Foundation Course in Design from a reputed institution
Bachelor of Design from National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmadabad
The BACHELOR OF DESIGN programme commences with a two semester rigorous Foundation Programme followed by 3 years of specialized studies in any of the disciplines offered in B.DES.
The one year Foundation Programme is geared towards developing values, perspectives, sensorial skills and aesthetic sensitivity essential for a designer in making. It introduces students to the fundamentals of design and helps develop ways of perception, understanding of multidisciplinary nature of design and relationship of design with human senses and emotions, culture, environment and ecology.
Basic design 'studio' courses are augmented by introductory studies in Science and Liberal Arts. This allows the students to develop a worldview, understanding of Indian milieu and the socio cultural context for Design to operate. The varied inputs over two semesters provide the necessary direction, stimuli, facilities and experience to foster creativity and thereby help each individual to discover their own identity and potential. The Foundation Programme is the basis on which the remaining design curriculum is built.

Admission is open to students who have passed or who will appear for qualifying examinations under the Higher Secondary (10+2) or equivalents like AISSCE/ IB/ ISC during the academic year 2014-15. Successful candidates shall be given admission to the academic programme, by the institute, subject to their passing the qualifying examinations. The medium of instruction at NID is English.
Upper age limit for candidates is 20 years (relaxable by 3 years for reserved categories) as on June 1, 2015.
For General Category: The candidates born before 1st June, 1995 are not eligible.
For Reserved Categories: The candidates born before 1st June, 1992 are not eligible.

Neha, Design is a field that is age old and has been evolving every year like science. Sometimes student Artists are too much enamoured by Fine Arts or Fashion Design preventing them to look objectively at Design. They must read this http://bit.ly/SXc9GD. Again like science it pays to be at the cutting edge. For e.g. science students do better if they go for CS or IT since that are areas where development is taking place rapidly. Similarly in Design the cutting edge areas are UID/ UXD, 3D Printing, Immersive Technology, Augmented Reality, 3D Projection etc, besides of course Game Design & Animation. Of course at the top of the pile lies Concept Designing (usually reserved for writers and visionaries) - these people are required by Event Companies, Animation Studios, VFX Studios, & of course Game Studios. At this stage, you may want to understand the creative world and the careers it offers. Interiors, textile as well as Web Design rely on the same skills - your layout skills and color sense. Journalism also is at this level and relies on your language skills & knowledge of history and current affairs. A little higher perches Graphic Design, Fashion Design, jewellery design, Acting, & Fine Arts which rely on one of your artistic skills - sketching & imagination. At a similar level perches VFX as well as Motion Graphics which rely on one of your artistic skills - Cinematographic skills & imagination. Then come careers like Animation, Film Making, Game Design which rely on multiple talents like your authority over sketching, acting, direction, voice, sound, writing, storytelling and problem solving skills etc. Any extra skill can be used in this. So it turns out to be one of the most challenging as well as satisfying careers. Sure not recommended for the weak hearted. Do remember that digital design careers (e.g. web design, graphics, UI design, animation, vfx, multimedia) give better profits since they can be delivered anywhere in the world & hence may earn in dollars - resulting in better rewards for designers.
