The maximum marks are 360. But for the admission, there are reservations based on the caste and so for each category, there has a different cut-off (only for JEE Mains).
However, for general category, it is sufficient to score 300 and above to get a top NIT.

GATE (Graduate Aptitude test in Engineering) is for admission into post graduate programmes like M.Tech
As the name implies, the questions are from the concepts that you would cover in the 4 years of B.Tech. For each branch of engineering, there are separate question papers so that you can do M.Tech from that branch itself.
In addition to this, you also have questions from general aptitude (GA).

Actually, there are so many benefits of qualifying JEE Mains. By qualifying the exam, you can get admission in top NITs, IIITs and many GFTIs.
Also, many excellent state government colleges accept JEE Mains scores such as DTU, NSIT, etc.
So, qualifying JEE Mains is awesome.
