About the scope, I would suggest metalurgy had a good scope but with a lot of work on itself. Conceding your marks if you have category or belong to home state still opt for a better branch in the collage. But if you have interest, metalurgy isn't a bad. You can best try for your home state NIT. And then some other NITs of low rank. But the chances are maximum for your home state NIT.

It depends on your JEE score, in RCOEM we have CET as well as management rounds with separate cutoffs for SC / ST, OBC and OPEN.

By now you would have understood if your interest lies in engineering. In case you have any interest and you want to pursue engineering as a career then GATE is for you. In case you like management then CAT is for you. But just to let you know, at any stage of life management is necessary, hence having an MBA degree and learning from it would always benefit you irrespective of your career path.

According to the previous year opening and closing ranks, your chances of getting an IIT are really low and for mechanical engineering you rank should be at least 5000-7000. So your chances are less. You can try it in the counselling.
