All three volumes of D J Deshmukh cover most of the syllabus and if you have more time then, you should go for book by G B Mishra on ventilation.

Follow these steps:
Study Subjects deeply during your semester exams as later you wont need to work hard.
Clear your basics.
Start your preparation with DMS as it is very very important subject.
Study simultaneously two subjects else you will get bored.(Depends on you)
Every day 23 hours regular study is enough for GATE preparation.
As soon as you complete the topic, solve the Previous year GATE question papers or exercise problems given at end of chapter in book.
Repeat the procedure same for all subjects.
Revision is very important,
Follow cycle Learn- Test- Analyze- improve- Learn- Test- Analyze- Improve
Solve 1 Aptitude problems daily.

No, you cannot because you can write GATE exam after you enter the 4th-year i.e before writing the final semester exams of engineering. The final year students are eligible to take GATE exam. Third year students are not eligible.

The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an examination that primarily tests the comprehensive understanding of various undergraduate subjects in engineering and science. GATE is conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science and seven Indian Institutes of Technology (Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) on behalf of the National Coordination Board GATE, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD),Government of India.

One can enroll and appear for the exam as many times as they want.
This is one more fact which gives a sense of relief to all of us that there is no restriction on the number of GATE attempts on the basis of caste. An aspirant belonging to any category, be it SC, ST, OBC or General can enroll and appear as many times as they desire. There are even many lecturers/professors who appear in GATE exam to keep their knowledge/skills updated.
few points need to be taken into account by GATE aspirants:
1)Aspirants, applying for concerned exam may apply at any age as there is no age bar for appearing in the GATE

Taking coaching for GATE is upto you but it is better to have a guidance. You can also clear it by self preparation itself provided you study in the write way.
You need to revise your concepts in engineering and solve as many problems as you can to gain practice and also to associate yourself with GATE pattern.
You may also solve the previous year questions of GATE exam to have an idea.
