According to information found on the official IIT JAM 2025 website, the tie-breaking criteria are as follows, in this order:

  • Lower negative marks.
  • NAT (Numerical Answer Type) marks.
  • MSQ (Multiple Select Question) marks.
  • score in 2 marks questions.
  • then score in 2 marks NAT.
  • If the tie still persists, the candidate's Date of Birth (DOB) is considered, with the older candidate receiving the higher rank.

Pursuing paramedical programs is eligible to apply for the IIT Joint Admission Test for M.Sc. in Biotechnology (IIT JAM);

However, you need to meet the eligibility requirements as stated by the participating IITs so that you will be able to get admission. There are, however, some basic criteria laid down by these institutes, by which, invariably, the candidate possesses an undergraduate degree in the relevant discipline and has certain minimum percentage marks that vary institution to institution.

The eligibility requirements for IIT JAM (Joint Admission Test for M.Sc.) did not involve a minimum percentage or marks in Class 12 for the majority of participating institutes. The eligibility criteria for IIT JAM are largely concerned with the bachelor's degree and the minimum marks or CGPA necessary to secure in that degree.

Candidates for the IIT JAM must have a Bachelor's degree from a recognized university with a minimum of 55 per cent aggregate or 5.5 CGPA/CPI. Yes, you are eligible to go for Biotechnology at IIT JAM. This is because maths is not a compulsary subject for Biotechnology. Thus, prepare well to get into IIT JAM. All the best.

Eligibility criteria: Students appearing for the IIT JAM exam must hold a Bachelor's degree in any discipline with a minimum of 55 percent aggregate marks for the general category students and 5 percent relaxation for Schedule Caste, Schedule Tribe, and Other Backward Caste students. Different IITs have different eligibility criteria which are listed below:
M.Sc. Applied Statistics and Informatics IITB
Mathematics or Statistics for at least two years/four semesters No Restrictions
M.Sc. Ph.D. Dual Degree in Operations Research IITB
Mathematics or Statistics for at least two years/four semesters
M.Sc. Statistics IITK
Bachelors degree in Statistics or at least 30 percent of total courses in Bachelors degree should be in Statistics
Joint M.Sc. Ph.D. in Atmosphere and Ocean Sciences IITBBS
Mathematics and Physics and any one of these subjects among Chemistry Computer Science, Computer Application, Geology, and Statistics.

To give IIT JAM examination in a specific subject one must have studied it for four or six semesters depending upon the paper that one choose. Different subjects have different eligibility criteria. I would recommend, to go onto the official IIT JAM organizing institute website, and then from their download the admission brochure. All details are given in it.

According to eligibility released by IIT JAM in year 2022, all that you need is to have passed the Bachelor's degree programme. Two years gap won't effect. In fact, there are many students who takes more than two years break for IIT JAM preparation. So, yes, you can apply for IIT JAM examination, just prepare well.
