IIT Dhanbad has a total seat intake of 596 which is divided into all 16 specialisations of the course. The seat intake of some popular specialisations are Chemical Engineering (27), CSE (50), Civil Engineering (32), Management Studies (40), etc. After CCMT counselling, seat allotment is carried out as per the seat intake for each M.Tech specialisation.

To get admission to M.Tech in IIT Dhanbad, students need to be eligible to apply for the course. The Institute accepts admission based on GATE entrance scores followed by COAP counselling. Students who are graduated from IIT are exempted from the GATE entrance score requirement. Hence, for admission, students need to apply for GATE by visiting the GOAPS website.

Aspirants are required to take the GATE exam followed by CCMT counselling to be eligible for admission to the institute. Candidates are hence required to complete the GATE application process. NIT Hamirpur shall shortlist students based on the exam scores and counselling.
