To start your career in merchant navy, you have two different options and then they further get divided into more options, so mainly those two options you have (if you wish to join after 12) is either study as usual in naval science college and get placed in any shipping company in placements (B.Tech marine engineering, B.Sc nautical science) or from start itself, get hired by any company, gain sponsorship and get trained by them in their respective academies and join their ships at the post of Deck Cadet.

To join marine engineering course you must have the following requirements:-
Education qualification:- Pass in the 10+2/equivalent examinations with physics, chemistry, and maths with minimum of 60%(it may vary depending on caste and the college you opt) in PCM taken together.
Age Limit:- The upper age limit is 20 years (25 years for ST/ST).
Physical standards:- You must be physically fit in all respect with no history of severe disease.
Eye sight:- The minimum acceptable eyesight is +2.5 or -2.5(Must not exceed this).

The minimum criteria of eligibility for this course are divided between two main requirements- educational and medical.
