Candidates need to complete LLB or Five-year integrated LLB from a recognised university with an aggregate of 55% (50% aggregate for SC/ ST) to apply for Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law LLM course. The Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law offers courses at UG, PG and doctoral levels. The university offers five-year integrated BA LLB (Hons), One-year LLM and a PG Diploma course. RGNUL provides scholarships to meritorious or financially-weak students. The university offers Foundation for Excellence Scholarship. However, students can also apply for scholarships offered by state or central government. Some of the scholarships available to students are the Central Sector Scholarship Scheme of Top Class Education for Scheduled Caste Students, the Central Sector Scholarship Scheme of Top Class Education for Scheduled Tribe Students, and other need-based scholarships.

Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law does not offers direct admission. Aspirants who wish to get a seat in BA LLB (Hons) or LLM need to qualify CLAT. For PhD, the university conducts an entrance test. The university conducts a written test of three hours of a maximum of 70 marks. The selection for PG Diploma course is based on merit of the apsirants in the last qualifying exam.

The Punjab State Legislature founded the Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL) in 2006. In addition to offering a PhD in a number of specializations, the university also provides an integrated B.A.-L.L.B. Hons. (Bachelor of Arts-Bachelor of Legislative Law) programme.
