For, Engineering courses, students need to qualify GATE exam and for non-Engineering courses, students need to qualify for the NET exam. However, one needs to be a graduate or post-graduate in a relevant stream.
- For Engineering specialisations, candidates must have completed their PG degree in Engineering/ Technology with a minimum CGPA of 6.5 in 10 point scale or 60% aggregate in the qualifying exam or have a bachelor's degree in Engineering/ Technology in a relevant area with a minimum CGPA of 7.5 or 70% aggregate and with a valid GATE score
- For Science specialisations, candidates must have completed their PG degree in Physics/ Chemist

Students seeking admission to PhD must have completed their masters' degree with at least 60% aggregate (For General category candidates). In addition to this, they are required to go through an entranc exam and interview round conducted at the institute level for final admission. The research proposal shared by the student is also examined by the institute's committe before making the final decision of shortlisting a candidate.

Admission to PhD programme offered at NIT Hamirpur is based on academic merit of the candidates and also subjects to the reputation of the institute/ university from where the candidates have pursued previous degree/ exam. Further, candidates need to have a valid score in GATE, UGC NET, CSIR NET to qualify for the shortlisting process. For final selection, the shortlisted candidates are called for a presentation round, followed by a PI round. The presentation round is based on the respective topic/ subject of the proposed research work of the candidates.
