Most universities require English professors to have, at the minimum, a Masters degree in literature. With a Masters, you can teach students pursuing an associate or Bachelors degree, but you will need a Ph.D. in literature to teach graduate level students. If you hope to enter a career as a professor of English literature, knowing the general courses you need will help guide your studies.

As per the eligibility criteria, you need to have a minimum of 50% in your UG. But you can check with the college you wish to apply if they consider this percentage.

You have not mentioned whether you want to teach at the college or the school level. If you wish to teach at the school level, you can start exploring B Ed courses and preparing for entrance exams. Alternatively, if you want to teach at the undergraduate level, you can prepare for NET (National Eligibility Test). For details visit: www.ugc.ac.in/inside/scope.html.
