Regarded as one of the most prestigious institutions for maritime education and training is the Indian Maritime University (IMU). Because of its excellent academic reputation and hands-on training, the marine industry is very interested in hiring its graduates. Surpassing 90% of its graduates are placed annually, demonstrating the university's strong placement record. Among the shipping companies are Anglo Eastern, BW Offshore, NYK Line, Maersk Line, Mol Maritime India Pvt Ltd, MOL Tankers Pvt Ltd, and Eastaway X-Press Feeder Vessels. Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT), Cochin Port Trust (CoPT), Visakhapatnam Port Trust (VPT), Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), Chennai Port Trust (CPT), and Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT) are the port authorities. BP, ONGC, and IOCL are a few oil and gas companies.  There are some more companies that are top recruiters of IMUC.

Depending on the placement season and the industry's need for maritime specialists, the Indian Maritime University's (IMU) top package changes every year. But the most expensive package that has been offered recently has been about 6 Lacs per annum (LPA). The largest shipment that a reputable transportation business offered an IMUC graduate in 2023 was 6 LPA. This represents a substantial rise above the highest package of 5 LPA from the prior year. Higher compensation packages are now available to IMUC graduates due to the growing demand for marine experts. Because of their solid academic credentials and hands-on training, IMU graduates are in great demand in the marine sector. Over 90% of the university's graduates get placed each year, demonstrating its excellent placement record. Graduates of IMUC find employment in the maritime sector in a range of capacities, including as engineers, seagoing officers, and shore-based staff.

Good placement are provided for graduates of IMU Chennai and IMU Navi Mumbai. But generally speaking, IMU Chennai's placement record is regarded as marginally superior to IMU Navi Mumbai's. This is caused by various factors, such as: Compared to IMU Navi Mumbai, IMU Chennai is more established and has a better reputation. Recruiters can more easily access IMU Chennai's graduates due to its more central location. Current students may find it easier to acquire employment thanks to the wider network of alumni at IMU Chennai. IMU Navi Mumbai has a placement rate of about 85%, while IMU Chennai has a placement rate of over 90%. These are unique placement data.  IMU Chennai graduates also tend to receive higher salaries than IMU Navi Mumbai graduates.

IMUC offers a strong placement record for both its B.Tech Marine Engineering and B.Tech Naval and Ocean Engineering programs. But when it comes to placement, B.Tech Marine Engineering often performs marginally better than B.Tech Naval and Ocean Engineering. Greater Demand for Marine Engineers: Compared to naval architects and ocean engineers, marine engineers are more in demand in the maritime sector. This is due to the fact that there are more ships in use than there are navy ships and ocean constructions. Greater Opportunities: Marine engineers can find employment on a range of ships, including offshore vessels, cargo ships, cruise ships, and tankers. Ocean engineers and naval architects sometimes have fewer career options and are more specialised in their expertise.  The B.Tech Marine Engineering placement rate at IMUC has been approximately 95% on average in recent years, whereas the B.Tech Naval and Ocean Engineering placement rate has been approximately 90% on average. Furthermore, the starting salary for marine engineers at IMUC is normally approximately ?6 LPA, but the starting salary for naval architects and ocean engineers is typically around ?5.5 LPA. 

Candidates who have been issued with IMU CET Rank Certificate are provided with a portal through which they can select the Programme (s) and the Campus (es) where they desire to take admission. Candidates have to register on this portal by making an online payment of INR 10,000/- towards the Counselling Fee. The Counselling Fee is nonrefundable if a seat is allotted on any campus in any programme; else INR 9000 will get refunded.
