How to prepare for CA Final exam?

CA Final is the toughest level of Chartered Accountancy course. It has six papers and one needs to clear all of them with at least 40% marks to be declared as a professional CA. The CA Final syllabus is so vast and the exam difficulty level is so high, that it is nearly impossible to clear in first attempt. On an average, one takes 3-4 attempts to clear both groups of CA Final, together.

Work extensively on case studies. These need in-depth analysis so you will need to work strategically. Understand pattern and structure.

Q:   How many months are required to cover CA Final exam syllabus?
A: 

Typically, 6 to 12 months are needed to cover CA Final exam syllabus. Those who are pursuing only CA course will need a minimum of 6 to 8 months, whereas working professionals balancing job with CA course will need 9 to12 months. Those who have made previous attempts in CA Final, may be able to cover the syllabus in 6 months. But in all scenarios, one needs to study in a focused manner as the syllabus is vast and requires in depth study. About 2 to 3 months are needed for practice and revision only.

To cover the CA Final exam syllabus:

·       Start with tough topics so that you can revisit them later if need be

It is not easy to crack CA Final by self study as one needs guidance and mentorship at various stages of preparation. Most of the CA students opt for coaching as it helps them study in a disciplined and dedicated manner. However, one can also crack the CA Final course level by self-study, if they are determined, dedicated and disciplined in their preparation. Also refer to the study material provided by the ICAI. To prepare by self study, one will need to first set clear goals, make a study time table and prioritise subjects. They will need to allocate a good number of hours daily to study. Practice test and revision are integral part of exam preparation, so the practice a good number of previous years question papers and sample papers.

The difficulty level of CA Final exams is the highest among all the as the course is vast and extensive. The CA Final exam includes papers such as Corporate & Economic Laws Part I: Corporate Law, Economic Laws, Strategic Cost Management and Performance Evaluation, Direct Tax Laws & International Taxation, Goods and Services Tax, Direct Tax Laws & International Taxation, etc. which are tough to crack. The pass percentage of CA Final exams is low as low as 25 per cent in a particular session and students need multiple attempts to clear this level. Even after completing the CA Foundation and CA Intermediate levels, candidates find it tough to clear the CA Final level.

Q:   How many months are required to prepare for CA Final exams?

There is no particular number of months for CA Final exam preparation. The time required by one student may be less or more than the other student. It is any way tough to crack the CA Final course level in one attempt. Students require about 2-3 attempts to clear the course level. One needs to study continuously.

CA Final Preparation Tips to Cover Syllabus

Here are a few suggestions that you can include in you CA Final preparation plan.

  • First of all, take a mock test of full CA syllabus to know your strength and weakness
  • Basis that, make a study plan to accommodate both easy and tough topics as required.
  • Make a realistic study plan. Have a definite time line and make a strategy to follow it to the T
  • Study 2-3 chapters daily, paper wise.
  • Make a cheat sheet of important rules, laws, statutes, etc.
  • Study for a minimum 8 hours of study on daily basis. On weekends, you can extend study hours to 12 to 14.
  • Increase practice of CA Final mocks and analysis as exam approaches
  • In the last two weeks focus only on revision, formula cheat sheet and short notes
  • Weekly, try to study 2-3 papers. Combine theory with practice to avoid burn out or lethargy. Immediate application of the theory helps in retaining it better.
  • Practice from past question papers, to have better clarity of what type of questions can be expected in your exam session and how much time and effort will it require to complete it.

Tips for CA Final Exam Day

  • In the CA Final exam, take five minutes to analyse and allot time to questions by their type.
  • Start with easy questions and move to tough ones
  • Do not spend too much time on a question. If you are not able to solve it in the first go, move on to next question. You can come back to the previous question later.
  • Keep 10-15 minutes for revision in the end

The ICAI has this year started conducting CA mock tests, Live Virtual Revision Classes and Success at CA exam series to assist students in exam preparation. The Success at CA Exam series is conducted by ICAI BoS faculty for registered students, wherein they provide valuable insights and support. They can access it at BoS website, its YouTube channel or App. Students, apart from their own study plan and assistance from coaching institutes, must attend these ICAI sessions to get good marks in CA Final exam.

According to recent official notice released by ICAI, the CA Final examination will conducted twice a year - May and November. This decision has been made for CA Final examination from May 2026 onwards.

According to ICAI, a candidate has to score a minimum of 40% in each subject and an aggregate of 50% in all subjects to clear CA Final exam. In case, they score 60 or more marks in one subject and fails in another, they can apply for exemption.
