I started appearing for entrance tests in my third year so that I don’t waste time: Shraosee Majumadar
I have always been interested in numbers and business, so commerce was the stream that I wanted to choose. I scored 90 per cent in my Class 10th boards and was bit confused whether to pursue Science or Commerce. Then I realised that I wasn’t someone who would study for several hours and score marks since PCM/PCB/PCMB would require a lot of dedication towards studying. That’s when I realised my true calling was Commerce. I decided that I will be doing Bachelors in Commerce in my graduation.
In my second year of graduation, I decided to do MBA for further studies. I started appearing for entrance tests in my third year so that I don’t waste another year and try to complete my education as soon as possible.
Vivekanand Education Society Institute of Management Studies and Research encourages a lot of qualities and enhances the capabilities of the students to grow and expand their limits and excel in the business world. It also encourages extracurricular activities and appreciates creativity. It gives fair opportunity to all the students and helps them rise in their interested fields.
I got into VESIM through my Common Entrance Test (CET) score. Other than this, I had appeared for Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT), National Medical Admission Test (NMAT), and Common Admission Test (CAT). I chose to sit for GMAT as I was trying to get into ISB Hyderabad through the Young Leaders Programme (YLP). The first step of this was to submit a 100 word essay and get shortlisted. Unfortunately, the score required to pass the second stage was 600/800 and I had scored 540 in the first attempt. I couldn’t get through NMIMS as the marks were than less than what was required. Since my university exams were going on, I couldn’t concentrate on taking CAT well.
The last exam which I took was CET and scored 78 percentile in it. I joined T.I.M.E in the second year of my graduation, the coaching class that helped me get through all the entrance exams. Other than VESIM, I had applied to IBS Powai; SIES Nerul; and N.L. Dalmia for the MBA programme. I got selected in IBS but wasn’t interested since it’s a private college and the Mumbai campus is not so good as compared to Hyderabad and also in N.L.Dalmia I made it to the second list. I couldn’t get through the interview round in SIES since it was of 70 per cent Tamil quota.
As in other colleges, I had to get through the Group Discussion and Personal Interview (GD/PI) round in VESIM, too. The GD round was really a good one since some of my mates were experienced and we had a good discussion on the topic ‘If I were the Prime Minister of the country for one day’. My PI was conducted by one of the marketing faculties of the college.
Not only did she take my interview but also shared some of her experiences in the market and college as well. It really did help me choosing my career path and being clearer in my future with respect to my goals.
My college starts at 9 am and goes on till 4 pm. I have five compulsory subjects and one elective subject that I have chosen advanced personal growth lab by Shariar Karim. The five compulsory subjects include:
- Human Resource Management
- Financial Management
- Research Methodology
- Entrepreneurship and Innovation
- Base SAS Programming DMT
I like to attend all the lectures but the most favourite is Research Methodology since I have a keen interest in research that I would like to do in the future. Apart from attending lectures, I like to sit in the library and study the various types of business magazines and other works related to management.
I am the Chief Editor of the newsletter ARTHONOMY of the General Management cell, Head of the event management of the E-cell and an active member of the Alumni cell.
As an MBA aspirant, I have experienced a lot of changes in myself- I have started thinking analytically, started taking responsibilities and working towards it, improving on my time management skills, my presentation skills have improved (no stage fear), learning to be presentable in front of business executives and also to increase connectivity, enhancing my team leadership skills.
After the MBA degree, I would like to work for a few years, gather some work experience and then wish to do PhD in one of the fields related to marketing.
I also wish to start my own venture of fine arts later and try to expand it.
