It is important to learn from your mistakes and equally important to learn from other’s mistakes: Shriram Iyer
Right from Class 7th, I had keen interest in science and math and used to score good marks in both these subjects. I was also interested in technology and wanted to know how it worked. My keenness led to a decision that I must take up engineering. Hence, after my Class 10th results, I got into Science stream. Later, I appeared for engineering entrance exams and managed to crack the exam to get into a good engineering college.
I later worked for more than five years in a multinational company and learnt about technology as well as the processes involved in the successful implementation of a technology. I was in Italy and Russia for project execution and experienced the work cultures of both these countries. I also enjoyed co-ordination and project lead activities.
After five years, I realised that data analytics is the future field where the world is going and took a decision to upgrade my skills by taking up the PGDM course at Vivekanand Education Society Institute of Management Studies and Research. I had only a month of preparation time after I came back from Russia and managed to study while I was still working. I cleared the MAT exam and applied for the PGDM seat at VESIM and got into it after the Group Discussion (GD) and Personal Interview (PI) rounds.
For entrance preparation, I did self-study and referred special books for solving questions. I also referred YouTube and used Google to study the concepts which were not clear to me.
Talking about my daily routine, I start from home at 7 am in the morning and reach college by 9 am. I attend almost all lectures because I want to learn maximum from everyone. It is important to learn from your mistakes and it is equally important to learn from the other’s mistakes and experiences as well. I like to attend lectures related to analytic software, statistics, research methodology, and marketing and operation research. I also sit in the library and read a few reference books related to these subjects.
I am part of an entrepreneurship and business incubation cell of our college which is one of the most dynamic cells and aims in bringing the entrepreneur inside us. We have different activities lined up apart from the recently concluded E-Talk where entrepreneurs from their respective fields came together for a panel discussion. It was such a wonderful experience that the students wanted to have another such discussion. This cell gives us the liberty to have a hands-on experience as to how an entrepreneur thinks and how he/she implements certain strategies to get things done. We are also planning to come up with a startup inside our college campus for the same purpose.
The activities which I do at college has made me think differently, it has made me take up certain responsibilities which help in self-development and self-actualization. I personally have the opinion that do it to know it and VESIM allows me to test my opinion.
I would love to share my experience after say 10 years of job experience to the students of VESIM. I would also love to teach in the future at VESIM. My long-term plan is to start my own venture/startup and be an entrepreneur and involve in the process of nation growth.
