Dr. Avadhut Arun Patwardhan is an Assistant Professor at K J Somaiya Institute of Management, Mumbai, with expertise in Young Consumer Behaviour and Technology Adoption. A former full-time research scholar at IIM Mumbai, Dr. Patwardhan has contributed to prestigious journals of international repute like the Journal of Medical Marketing and the International Journal of Healthcare Management. He brings over 12 years of teaching experience and 2 years of industry experience to his classroom, where he uses case studies and interactive activities to engage students. He was recognised for his academic excellence and  was awarded the Best Thesis award at Prestige Institute of Management, Gwalior. In this interview, Dr. Patwardhan shares how K J Somaiya Institute of Management is preparing students for success in an ever-changing global landscape.

Q1. How do you foster confidence and curiosity in students, especially in topics like diversity, equity and inclusion?
K J Somaiya Institute of Management (KJSIM) is recognized for its value-driven learning-centric approach. KJSIM is an institute that has conceptualized and practiced the philosophy of #TransformingTogether. At KJSIM the students experience the transformation with the help of an award-winning initiative ‘Parivartan’. This initiative adds to their confidence by helping them understand their competencies. The students also learn the critical thinking process by participating in the ‘Ken and Economist’ Initiative. As a result, the students are highly informed about their strengths and areas of improvement. Further, the curriculum includes contemporary topics like diversity, equity, and inclusion to enhance the contextual relevance of the students. The KJSIM faculty members conduct workshops, seminars, and panel discussions with industry leaders and academics on themes like DEI. Student clubs also host various events to celebrate cultural diversity and practice inclusivity. Experiences like the Global Immersion Program allow students to appreciate diverse ways of thinking.

Q3. How do you ensure an up-to-date course curriculum helps students stay at par with corporate expectations? How do you make students industry-ready?
At KJSIM the course curriculum is designed with active input from industry experts, alumni, and academic leaders to ensure it meets current and future market demands. The regular revisions of the syllabus reflect emerging trends, technologies, and business practices. To make students industry-ready, the institute follows a learning-by-doing approach. Activities like capstone and live projects, case studies, internships, and simulation exercises, online certifications give students hands-on experience.

Q4. What are the teaching methodologies that your college is currently following? Do these technologies resemble new-age teaching technologies?
At K J Somaiya Institute of Management, the teaching methodologies combine traditional academic rigor with innovative, tech-enabled practices like Bloomberg and omniverse labs.
