Falling below the minimum in any single section results in disqualification.
• Institutes without Strict Sectional Cutoffs: Several private B-schools, such as FORE School of Management, Great Lakes, and TAPMI, primarily screen candidates based on composite or aggregate CAT percentiles, offering flexibility to candidates who scored lower in one section.

2. Profile-Based Shortlisting

Many top private institutes running programs in the 80–85 percentile range conduct early or profile-based interview rounds. Under this criteria, candidates can secure an interview call before or regardless of high CAT scores if they demonstrate strong credentials in other areas.

• Key Evaluation Factors: Academic consistency (Class 10, Class 12, and graduation marks), relevant work experience (typically 12 to 36 months), gender diversity, and academic background diversity (non-engineering degrees).
• Special Shortlisting Rounds: B-schools such as Goa Institute of Management (Achiever's Round) and TAPMI evaluate exceptional profiles, certifications, or achievements, giving lower weight to test scores during initial screening.
• Multiple Test Scores: Most private institutes in this tier also accept scores from XAT, GMAT, or CMAT. If your CAT performance is borderline, you can update or submit alternative test scores during their extended application windows.

MBA Admission and Selection Criteria: An Overview

Selection criteria and admission process of most of these institutes includes GD/PI. Screening of candidates is done on the basis of CAT result.

Group Discussion and Personal Interview (GD/PI)

Group Discussion and Personal Interview are personality assessment tests. They are conducted to judge the candidate’s communication skills, knowledge, personality, confidence, presence of mind, aptitude, leadership qualities, etc. Every candidate is required to be present in person to participate in the GD/PI, as the final selection is majorly based on candidate’s performance in this round. 

Final Selection of Candidates

Final selection for MBA admission is based on the candidate’s overall performance in academics, CAT exam and GD/PI. However, it may be noted that every institute has its own parameters to select candidates for admission.
